H.E. Eng. Fahad AL Qahtani, Undersecretary for Urban Planning Affairs, Ministry of Municipality and Environment

"The Congress will establish the long-awaited platform to discuss the globally significant issues like: future of post-oil cities, metabolic cities, diversifying the economies, mobility and connectivity, resilience, culture and liveability."

At the Ministry of Municipality and Environment we are all thrilled that the International Society of City and Regional Planners has selected Doha as the host City for the Coming ISOCARP World Planning Congress 2020. We are committed with all our staff affiliated with the Ministry, planning affairs sector and municipalities as well as research and educational institutions, universities, developers and stakeholders all over Qatar to take part in delivering ISOCARP World Planning Congress 2020. We also wish to make it a turning point in the history of ISOCARP Congresses. With all the capabilities and resources, we would like to guarantee the success of organizing the event, making it a model for organizing global conferences. The Congress will take place in the newly redeveloped central part of Doha – within the area of Msheireb mixed use project. Therefore, it will be embedded in the city, rather than limited to a single venue, and also more open to the public.

The theme of the Congress – Post-Oil City: Planning for Urban Green Deals – is very timely, as the challenge of reducing dependency on fossil fuels and working for a sustainable future is inevitable. The planning profession has a paramount responsibility to tackle these issues and revisit the way we plan, build and experience our cities. Hence, the Congress will establish the long-awaited platform to discuss the globally significant issues like: future of post-oil cities, metabolic cities, diversifying the economies, mobility and connectivity, resilience, culture and liveability. We are looking forward to contribute with our experiences and examples, as well as learn from the others, in order to jointly move towards 'Urban Green Deals'.

I invite the architects, urban designers and planners from all over the word and particularly the Middle East, Gulf and Africa, to plan for an effective and inspiring participation in ISOCARP World Planning Congress Doha 2020. Take this opportunity to submerge in the beautiful and welcoming Doha, making it a platform to learn and to inspire. You are all welcome to be part of an exceptional event in an exceptional city.

Finally, I would like to welcome you all to Qatar and wish you a good and useful time in the unique, diverse, cultured and vibrant State of Qatar and its ever growing and developing capital – Doha.

Welcome to the beautiful Doha.
